WHO warns of yellow fever transmission across nine African countries

What changed

On 6 November 2026, WHO published a yellow fever outbreak notice documenting transmission in nine African countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Togo. WHO identified the most recent outbreak activity as concentrated in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Liberia, including areas near international borders. The surveillance information covers confirmed cases reported through 12 October 2026 and does not establish active transmission in every locality.

Does this affect me?

Travelers visiting areas with yellow fever transmission risk in the nine identified countries, especially unvaccinated visitors and people traveling through affected border communities or undertaking outdoor activities in forested, agricultural or mining areas. Exposure risk depends on the specific destination and itinerary rather than country inclusion alone.

What should I do?

Before visiting a yellow-fever-risk area, consult a travel-health professional about vaccination. WHO advises vaccination for international travelers aged nine months and older visiting such areas. Check destination-specific vaccination certificate requirements, retain valid documentation where required and protect against mosquito bites. The WHO notice does not introduce a universal new vaccination mandate or recommend travel restrictions.
